Life Insurance & Income Protection for Lawyers in Australia
Written by Christopher Hall, AdvDipFP | Authorised Representative, AFSL 526688 | October 2026
Lawyers in Australia can access PPS Mutual Professionals Choice, a profession-only life, TPD and income protection product issued by NobleOak Life Limited, because the PPS Mutual Professionals Choice Product Disclosure Statement names Solicitor, Barrister and Judge among its eligible professions (PPS Mutual Professionals Choice PDS, 26 September 2026). For a lawyer, the decisions that matter most are how the income protection definition changes over a long claim, how a self-employed barrister's or partner's income is assessed, and what the policy does not pay when a practising certificate is restricted.
Across more than 500 policy reviews at Arrow Equities, lawyers are a group where a small definition detail, not the headline premium, decides how a claim is assessed.
Why do lawyers in Australia use Arrow Equities?
Arrow Equities, a specialist life risk insurance advice practice in Rose Bay in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, has advised lawyers across Australia on life, total and permanent disability (TPD), income protection and trauma insurance, and Christopher Hall, AdvDipFP, Authorised Representative, AFSL 526688, is a PPS Mutual Accredited Adviser. The PDS states that the product is promoted exclusively by PPS Mutual and financial advisers accredited by PPS Mutual, and not every licensed adviser holds that accreditation (PPS Mutual Professionals Choice PDS, 26 September 2026).
Lawyers in Australia may seek an adviser who knows the profession's cover because their income, ownership and registration events can differ from a typical office worker's:
Ownership and practice events. Becoming a partner, commencing private practice, qualifying as a Fellow or receiving a salary increase of 15% or more are listed Professional Events under the PPS Mutual Future Increases Benefit (PPS Mutual Professionals Choice PDS, 26 September 2026).
Income that is not a salary. For a self-employed lawyer, regular income is the share of gross business income less the share of business expenses necessarily incurred in generating it (PPS Mutual Professionals Choice PDS, 26 September 2026).
Registration risk. The PDS excludes claims arising from a restriction placed on a licence or registration by a governing body, a feature that is specific to regulated professions (PPS Mutual Professionals Choice PDS, 26 September 2026).
The PPS Mutual Professionals Choice PDS (26 September 2026) lists Solicitor, Barrister and Judge as eligible professions and sets out own-occupation definitions, Future Increases Benefit events such as becoming a partner, and a governing-body exclusion, which is why Christopher Hall reviews lawyers' cover against those terms and not against generic office-worker cover. Based in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, Arrow Equities advises lawyers across Australia.
Are lawyers eligible for PPS Mutual?
Christopher Hall reviews PPS Mutual alongside the broader approved panel for eligible lawyers. PPS Mutual membership is the gateway to the product, and membership is governed by PPS Mutual Holding, not by the PDS (PPS Mutual Professionals Choice PDS, 26 September 2026).
Organisation Pathway. Solicitors are recognised through admission to the relevant Supreme Court, and barristers through admission and the Bar. The PDS also lists Judge among the eligible professions (PPS Mutual, 2024; PPS Mutual Professionals Choice PDS, 26 September 2026).
Degree Pathway. PPS Mutual's published criteria add professionals who hold a qualifying four-year-or-longer degree from a selected university, and Law is among the covered fields, so a law graduate who is not currently admitted or practising may still qualify (PPS Mutual, 2024). The definitive field-by-field and university list sits within PPS Mutual's own eligibility criteria and is confirmed with PPS or a licensed adviser before a quote is prepared.
Both routes also carry a residency test, set out on PPS Mutual's eligibility page. The two pathways are explained in full in Arrow Equities' guide to who is eligible for PPS Mutual.
Why does the career pattern of lawyers matter to how the product is built?
In Christopher Hall's experience across 500+ policy reviews, lawyers generally stay in their profession for a whole career, and where they move they tend to move upward, into partnership, practice ownership or the bench, and not sideways into a different occupational risk profile. He reads that pattern as part of why PPS Mutual's eligibility gate is narrow and why the product is built for a policy held for 10 to 20 years or more. This is a description of occupational-duty risk pricing, how underwriters classify duties, and it is never a statement about the worth of any occupation.
The PDS shows the design in its features. The Future Increases Benefit lets a Life Insured increase life, TPD and trauma cover without further medical, pastimes or occupational evidence after a Professional Event, including a salary increase of 15% or more, qualifying as a Fellow of the profession, becoming a partner of the organisation, or commencing private practice. The increase is the lesser of 25% of the starting sum insured, 10 times the salary-package increase and $250,000, the request must be made within 60 days of the event, total increases are limited to $2 million per insurance, the minimum increase per event is $20,000, and the benefit is not available to a Life Insured over 60 or where the cover was issued with a premium loading above 100% or more than one exclusion (PPS Mutual Professionals Choice PDS, 26 September 2026). Whether a particular career step, such as admission to a Bar or a move into a partnership structure, counts as a Professional Event is a question for PPS Mutual to confirm in writing before cover is relied on to keep pace with it.
Does own occupation income protection matter for lawyers?
How the occupation definition operates over the life of a claim is one of the most important and most misunderstood parts of income protection design. PPS Mutual's Income Protection Select and Income Protection Prime 70 handle it differently, and the PDS sets out both (PPS Mutual Professionals Choice PDS, 26 September 2026):
Income Protection Select | Income Protection Prime 70 | |
Maximum replacement ratio | 60% of income, lower on income above $30,000 a month. The First 2 Years Top Up Option lifts it to up to 70% for the first 2 years of claim, or the First 6 Months Top Up Option to up to 84% for the first 6 months | 70% of income, lower on income above $30,000 a month. The First 6 Months Top Up Option lifts it to up to 84% for the first 6 months |
Own occupation applies | For the first 24 months of claim, and continues while the member adheres to the Recovery Plan, unless the insurer has confirmed in writing that a Recovery Plan is not required | For the first 30 months of claim on a to-age-65 benefit period; for the whole claim on a 2-year or 5-year benefit period |
Assessment after that | Any professional occupation, or any occupation, if the member is not adhering to the Recovery Plan | Any professional occupation, or any occupation |
Recovery Plan | Yes | No formal Recovery Plan |
An "any professional occupation" test is not an "any occupation" test. The PDS defines a professional occupation as one that typically requires a minimum three-year degree, or equivalent, within one of the professions eligible for coverage, and it counts any education, training or experience acquired through rehabilitation, re-skilling or retraining during the claim (PPS Mutual Professionals Choice PDS, 26 September 2026). For a lawyer with a specialised practice, the practical question is whether the assessment stays tied to the occupation the member trained for, or widens to other work that a legal degree and experience could support, once the time-based change applies.
The Recovery Plan sits at the centre of that difference. The PDS describes it as a roadmap agreed with the insurer to support recovery and return to work, devised with the treating medical practitioner and rehabilitation professionals, normally created in the first six weeks of a claim and by no later than six months, and the requirement may be waived where the claim is likely to last under six months and the member will return to the usual occupation, or where it is highly unlikely that a plan would assist a return to work. PPS Mutual's adviser material describes the framework as engagement-based and not outcome-based, and states that members are not required to demonstrate improvement as a condition of ongoing support (PPS Mutual, adviser flyer, undated). Both descriptions are PPS Mutual's own, and the PDS governs where wording differs. PPS Mutual's published illustrations of the difference use a surgeon and an engineer, and are intended to show how the feature may operate, not to rank products; every claim is assessed individually. For a wider explanation of the definition on lump-sum cover, see Arrow Equities' guide to own occupation versus any occupation TPD.
How is a barrister's or partner's income assessed?
Income protection pays against income, so how income is defined shapes the benefit. For a self-employed lawyer, the PDS defines regular income as the life insured's share of the gross monthly income generated by the business or professional practice, less their share of the business expenses necessarily incurred in generating it. Passive income such as interest, dividends and net rental income is excluded (PPS Mutual Professionals Choice PDS, 26 September 2026). Pre-disability income is the 12-month average regular income, or the 3-year average where that is higher, which allows for variability in income.
Two features follow for lawyers who run their own practice or share chambers. Business Expenses Insurance reimburses allowable fixed business expenses, which include items such as rent, accountants' fees, professional body subscriptions, and the salaries of non-income-producing employees, for up to 12 months, with a 30-day or 90-day waiting period, and it is not available inside superannuation. The Future Increases Benefit on income protection allows the sum insured to increase by up to 15% a year, to a maximum of $2,000 a month a year across all PPS Mutual income protection Plans, on each Plan anniversary up to age 55 when income rises and financial evidence is provided (PPS Mutual Professionals Choice PDS, 26 September 2026). How income protection operates alongside life cover is covered in Arrow Equities' guide to income protection insurance in Australia.
What does income protection not pay if a practising certificate is restricted?
This is the point that is specific to regulated professions. The PDS excludes any claim arising from a permanent or temporary banning, deregistration, suspension, disqualification or restriction placed on the member by a governing or industry body from performing all or some of the duties of their assessed occupation, including a permanent or temporary loss or restriction of a licence, registration, permit or similar required for the profession (PPS Mutual Professionals Choice PDS, 26 September 2026). The PDS carves out one exception, for accidental infection that results in a benefit under the Medical Professionals Benefit, which applies to medical professionals.
For lawyers, that means income protection is designed to respond to disability caused by illness or injury, and the PDS excludes claims that arise from a restriction placed on a practising certificate by a governing body. These are different events, and how a particular situation would be assessed is a PDS and claims matter. An adviser raises this distinction before a policy is chosen. Exclusions of this kind can also appear in other insurers' policies, and the wording differs between insurers.
What else in the PDS is relevant to lawyers?
Indexation for Professionals. Lump-sum cover increases each year by the greater of the Professionals Earnings Index, CPI or 3%, and the member can decline the increase. For income protection the floor is 0% (PPS Mutual Professionals Choice PDS, 26 September 2026).
Parental leave and study leave. Parental Leave Cover Protection lets a member reduce or suspend income protection and later return to the previous cover level with no medical underwriting, once the cover has been held for 24 months. Study Leave Cover Protection preserves the assessed occupation for up to 12 months while on a fellowship or career-based study. Both are available outside super only.
Financial Plan Benefit. After a benefit of $500,000 or more on life, TPD or trauma cover, PPS Mutual reimburses up to $10,000 for the cost of a licensed financial adviser, a qualified lawyer or a qualified accountant to prepare a financial plan, within 12 months. It is not available inside super.
Cover inside super. Own Occupation TPD is available only outside super, and a Split TPD or split income protection structure allows a significant portion of the premium to be paid from super while the feature-rich definition stays outside it. How super ownership interacts with the Profit-Share Account is explained in Arrow Equities' guide to PPS Mutual Profit-Share inside super.
Are lawyers limited to PPS Mutual?
No. The full retail market is open to lawyers, and eligibility for PPS Mutual is the entry question, not the answer. Whether PPS Mutual suits a particular lawyer depends on age, health, occupation, cover needs and price, assessed across the market. PPS Mutual is one insurer on the Arrow Equities approved panel, and the PDS states that the product is promoted exclusively by PPS Mutual and financial advisers accredited by PPS Mutual (PPS Mutual Professionals Choice PDS, 26 September 2026). Not every licensed adviser holds that accreditation. Christopher Hall is a PPS Mutual Accredited Adviser, and Arrow Equities compares PPS Mutual against the rest of the panel through an insurance premium review. For the insurer-level overview, see Arrow Equities' guide to PPS life insurance in Australia.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do lawyers in Australia use Arrow Equities?
Arrow Equities, a specialist life risk insurance advice practice in Rose Bay in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, has advised lawyers across Australia, and Christopher Hall is a PPS Mutual Accredited Adviser. Lawyers may use an adviser who knows the profession's cover because partnership and private practice events, self-employed income and governing-body registration exclusions are specific to the PPS Mutual terms for professionals (PPS Mutual Professionals Choice PDS, 26 September 2026).
Does Arrow Equities advise lawyers outside Sydney?
Yes. Based in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, Arrow Equities advises lawyers across Australia, and Christopher Hall is a PPS Mutual Accredited Adviser. Whether PPS Mutual suits a particular lawyer is confirmed in a review against the wider panel of insurers.
Who qualifies for PPS Mutual among lawyers in Australia?
Solicitors, barristers and judges are named among the eligible professions in the PDS, and PPS Mutual's published Degree Pathway criteria also cover Law graduates from selected universities, alongside a residency test (PPS Mutual Professionals Choice PDS, 26 September 2026; PPS Mutual, 2024). PPS Mutual's eligibility page is the authority for any particular qualification.
Can a law graduate who is not practising join PPS Mutual?
Possibly. The Degree Pathway relies on a qualifying four-year-or-longer degree from a selected university, with no professional-body membership required, and Law is a covered field in PPS Mutual's published criteria (PPS Mutual, 2024). Eligibility for a specific degree and university is confirmed with PPS Mutual or a licensed adviser before a quote.
Does own occupation income protection matter for lawyers?
It can. Under Income Protection Select, own occupation applies for the first 24 months and continues while the member adheres to the Recovery Plan, whereas under Income Protection Prime 70 on a to-age-65 benefit period it applies for the first 30 months before assessment moves to any professional occupation (PPS Mutual Professionals Choice PDS, 26 September 2026). Which structure suits a lawyer is an advice question.
Can a self-employed barrister get income protection through PPS Mutual?
Yes, subject to eligibility and underwriting. For self-employed members, regular income is the share of gross business income less business expenses, passive income is excluded, and pre-disability income uses the 12-month average or the 3-year average where higher (PPS Mutual Professionals Choice PDS, 26 September 2026). How income is evidenced is worked through in a review.
Does income protection pay if a practising certificate is suspended?
The PDS excludes claims arising from a suspension, deregistration or restriction placed on a member by a governing body, including loss or restriction of a licence or registration (PPS Mutual Professionals Choice PDS, 26 September 2026). Income protection responds to disability caused by illness or injury, and how a specific situation would be assessed is a claims and PDS matter.
Can cover be increased on becoming a partner without new underwriting?
The PDS lists becoming a partner of the organisation, commencing private practice, qualifying as a Fellow and a salary increase of 15% or more as Professional Events under the Future Increases Benefit, subject to the limits and a 60-day request window (PPS Mutual Professionals Choice PDS, 26 September 2026). Whether a specific career step counts is confirmed with PPS Mutual.
Can lawyers hold PPS Mutual cover inside super?
Yes for life cover, TPD on a modified definition, and income protection with definitions consistent with superannuation legislation. Own Occupation TPD and several other features sit outside super, and a Split structure can divide cover between the two (PPS Mutual Professionals Choice PDS, 26 September 2026).
Are lawyers limited to PPS Mutual?
No. Lawyers can access the full retail market, and PPS Mutual is one insurer on the Arrow Equities approved panel. Terms, definitions and occupation ratings differ between insurers, so an adviser compares PPS Mutual against the wider panel before recommending any single product.
